From the San Francisco Chronicle:
Guess who now favors same sex marriage? The godfather of the “Defense of Marriage Act”, Bill Clinton.
BC was speaking at the liberal Campus Progress National Conference when he was asked if he personally supported same-sex marriage. Said Bill: “Yeah.” “I personally support people doing what they want to do,” Clinton said. “I think it’s wrong for someone to stop someone else from doing that [same-sex marriage].”
This is a great move by President Clinton, and is the first step in overturning the discriminatory Public Law No. 104-199, 110 Stat, more commonly known as the Defense of Marriage Act.
President Clinton hasĀ served as the target of civil rights advocates for his role in signing the Act into law. However, with both houses of Congress being controlled by Republicans at the time, overwhelming majority votes in favor of the Act (85-14 in the Senate, and 342-67 in the House), and the Act’s author being the notorious Georgian Senator Bob Barr, it is clear that the President had little choice in the matter.
The President’s newest declaration should add weight to the argument for marriage equality, another voice cheering “I do.”
