Letters to the Editor

Not surprisingly, Jonathan Rauch and David Blankenhorn’s NYT op-ed on finding a compromise on the issue of gay marriage inspired a few Letters to the Editor. In fact, today’s entire NYT letters page is devoted to them:

Sodomites vs. The Righteous: A Historical Knockdown

“Sodomite” is one of the oldest, ugliest homosexual slurs. The word is from the name of a town, Sodom, in the Bible. It is said some of the first gays, (a particularly angry desert breed, apparently), lived there.
My theory is, if you examine the story of the Sodomites with attention, you will find it a [...]

UK Hates Phelps

From Reuters:
LONDON - An anti-gay U.S. Christian preacher and his daughter have been barred from entering Britain as they could spread “extremism and hatred,” the British government said Thursday.
The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, had been due in Britain to protest at a play about the murder of a [...]

Is there room for compromise on civil marriage equality?

Jonathan Rauch, a man I greatly respect on this issue, thinks there is. From today’s NYT:

The Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll released Wednesday finds that 48 percent of New Jersey residents favor gay marriage, with 43 percent opposed.
Fifty percent oppose amending the state Constitution to ban gay marriage. [...]

Civil marriage equality good for our troubled economy

From WalletPop:
Remember when African Americans couldn’t drink from the same drinking fountains as whites? Remember when gay people couldn’t get married? Both scenarios sound so ridiculous.
Especially when you think about how much money is to be gained if same-sex couples are legally allowed to get married. Just look at the figures broken down by [...]

Gay jokes anyone?

From the AP:
Wanda Sykes will soon get the chance to make fun of President Obama to his face.
The comic actress has been selected as the entertainer at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington.
“The first thing I did when they asked me to do this gig: I made sure my taxes were paid,” [...]
